Four Paintings by Stephanie Deshpande Selected for the Lunar Codex Archive

I’m thrilled to announce that four of my paintings have been selected as semi-finalists in the 17th ARC Salon and will be included in the Lunar Codex! In collaboration with the Art Renewal Center (ARC), the Lunar Codex will archive all 1,970+ semi-finalist works from the 17th ARC Salon. My selected paintings include:

  • Dreams at Bay – Figurative
  • Fireside Kiss – Figurative
  • The Bonfire – Figurative
  • The Message – Fully From Life

These works, along with others from the ARC Salon, will be preserved in the Polaris archive, set for launch in September 2025. This mission will be carried out by NASA’s CLPS-TO-20A project aboard the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket and the Astrobotic Griffin lunar lander, bound for the Moon’s south pole.

The Polaris archive is a multimedia collection that will preserve art on materials like nickel foil, Nanofiche, semiconductor memory, and synthetic DNA, with certain formats designed to last over a million years. The Lunar Codex stands as the largest and most inclusive cultural archive of its kind, representing art, music, writing, and film from 254 nations, regions, and Indigenous communities. ARC artists are featured in six of the seven Lunar Codex missions, with the first Moon landing of ARC-related works taking place on February 22, 2024. This project is creating a legacy of art and culture that will endure for generations, with three missions already completed and four more scheduled.
