Thomas Eakins, Baby at Play
This is one of my favorite paintings by Thomas Eakins. I find myself thinking about it frequently when I paint. Eakins was trying to convey the intelligence of a child. This isn’t just a picture of a child playing, but of a child’s mind working and developing. Notice how Eakins uses light to bring attention to the child’s forehead/mind. The child is in a state of deep concentration using the blocks to build and construct.
